Description

A picture of Newcastle upon Tyne

Photograph of the military vehicle museum in the exhibition park, Newcastle upon Tyne. The building was officially opened on may 14th 1929 as part of the north east coast exhibition it was opened by HRH the prince of wales. It was known as the palace of fine arts and housed sculptures, paintings and silverware of the local aristocracy. The exhibition lasted until the 26th of october 1929, then the building stood empty till 1934, where it become the museum of science and engineering, holding the MV TURBINIA. In the early 1980's the museum relocated to a more central location and is now re-named the discovery museum. In 1983, the military vehicle museum took the building over and was officially opened by councillor stabler, who was carried to the museum in (OLD FAITHFUL)the humber staff car used by general montgomery during the invasion of europe. The museum is a registered educational charity run entirely by volunteers and houses a unique collection of not only vehicles, as the title suggests, but also uniforms, weapons and artefacts used by armed forces across the world from the early 1900's till the present day. The museum houses over 50 vehicles which range from bicycles to armoured personnel carriers. We have equipment dating from the first world war over 70 manequins dressed in uniforms and weapons ranging from fighting knives to anti-aircraft guns.
